On May 10, 2022, Refik Anadol’s Living Architecture: Casa Batlló, inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s building in Barcelona, Spain, became Anadol’s first artwork to be auctioned by Christie’s. The piece was displayed on a giant media screen in New York’s iconic Rockefeller Plaza from April 30 - May 13. On May 7 a live projection mapping performance of the work on the actual facade of the historical building was viewed by an enormous crowd of 50,000. Living Architecture: Casa Batlló was the only NFT offered during Christie’s 21st Century Evening Sale which also included physical works by Banksy, Gerhard Richter, and Jeff Koons, and set records for the next generation of young artists. As Artnet News reported, “The cutting edge keeps shifting — most recently to NFTs, ‘a critical part’ of the new frontier and youth culture, according the president of Christie’s Jussi Pylkkänen. And so, Christie’s concluded the auction with Living Architecture: Casa Batlló…Less than three minutes later, the work sold for $1.4 million. The room erupted in applause.”
