Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy: 1927-2009

Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy, the founding chair of UCLA’s Department of Ethnomusicology, died peacefully of lung cancer Saturday, June 20 at his home in Van Nuys, California. He was 81. >>link

Mark O’Connor String Institute

UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music’s inaugural artist-in-residence is world-renowned violinist and fiddler Mark O’Connor who, along with teaching and performances on campus, will be offering an outstanding music program to community members: the Mark O’Connor String Institute.>>link

Gloria Cheng (Music faculty) won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra).

Jesus Guzman (Ethnomusicology faculty) is a member of the group Mariachi Los Camperos De Nati Cano, whose CD won a Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Album.

Ethnomusicology professor Cheryl Keyes was awarded an NAACP Image Award under the category of "world music" for her debut CD, "Let Me Take You There." The 40th NAACP Image Awards aired live on February 12, 2009 on FOX. >>link

Art Professor James Welling's exhibition at Regen Projects, Los Angeles received an International Association of Art Critics/USA (AICA) award for best show in a commercial gallery nationally. >>link

AUD professor Greg Lynn's "Recycled Toy Furniture Prototypes" awarded the Golden Lion for Best Installation at the Venice Biennale. >>link
